iPlay in the Community

This summer, iTheatre began a community outreach project with the UMOM New Day Center. UMOM is a transitional shelter for homeless families. Their mission is: To provide homeless and low-income families with food, shelter and tools to build a bridge to self-sufficiency. It is a wonderful organization that is truly helping families in our community.

We created an introductory drama workshop for the teenaged kids that reside at UMOM. For four weeks in July, we introduced sixteen teenagers to drama through theater games, exercises and improvisation. The workshop focused on improving and developing their skills in communication, concentration, problem solving, group interaction and creativity. Of course the kids had a blast. And so did we.

Our next step is to expand the workshop we created into a longer, more in-depth program that we can bring back to UMOM later this year. We received a small grant that supported the work this summer and currently, we are working on securing funding for the fall part of this project. Our long-term goal is to create an on-going drama/theater program at UMOM.
